Marc Brackett
Lead Developer of RULER, Child and Adult Emotional Intelligence Expert, Co-Founder of Oji Life Lab, Founding Director for Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence

Marc Brackett, Ph.D., is the founding director for the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. He is a professor in the Child Study Center at Yale School of Medicine where he researches the role of emotions and emotional intelligence in learning, decision making, creativity, relationship, quality, and mental health; the measurement of emotional intelligence; and the influences of emotional intelligence training on children’s and adults’ health, performance, and workplace performance and climate. With over 125 published scholarly articles, Marc received the Joseph E. Zins Award for his research on social and emotional learning. March also received an honorary doctorate from Manhattanville College and is a distinguished scientist on the National Commission on Social, Emotional, and Academic Development where he serves on the board of directors for the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL).


Marc Brackett serves as the lead developer of RULER, a high-impact and fast-effect approach to understanding and mastering emotions that has already transformed thousands of schools in the United States and in other countries like Australia, China, England, Italy, Mexico, and Spain. RULER works to implement social and emotional learning into the heart of schools through influencing how school administrators lead, educators teach, students learn, and families parent. RULER has been proven to increase academic performance, decrease school problems such as bullying, enriches classroom climates, reduces teacher stress and burnout, and enhances teacher instructional practices.


Permission to Feel is Marc’s newest book, releasing in September of 2019 where he shares his strategies to RULER and the positive effects of it. This book combines rigor, science, passion, and inspiration in equal parts. Mar Brackett’s life mission is to reverse the course of emotional suffering and shame through his excelled program RULER.


Co-founder of Oji Life Lab, Marc Brackett works with large companies to integrate principles of emotional intelligence into training and product design. Oji Life Lab is a corporate learning firm that develops innovative digital learning systems for emotional intelligence. Marc has developed several products for Facebook including social resolution tools that serve resolve conflict; a bullying prevention hub to support educators, families, and teens; and InspirED, which is an open-source resource center to support high school students in leading positive change in their schools.
