Leora Tanenbaum is the author of Taking Back God: American Women Rising Up for Religious Equality. This book is about devout women—Catholic, Protestant, Muslim, and Jewish—who love their religion but are troubled about their second-class status within their faith and are doing something about it. Her other books are Catfight: Rivalries Among Women—From Diets to Dating, From the Boardroom to the Delivery Room, about the ways in which women often try to sabotage one another, and Slut! Growing Up Female With a Bad Reputation, about girls labeled "sluts" by their peers. Catfight has been published in Germany, Australia/New Zealand, Turkey, Greece, and was a selection of the Quality Paperback Book Club in 2003. Slut! has been published in Turkey and in the United States it is a staple in women’s studies courses on college campuses.
In addition to books, Tanenbaum has written for Newsday, Seventeen, Cosmopolitan, Salon, The New York Observer, Ms., The Nation, The Women’s Review of Books, and many other newspapers and magazines. She is currently a blogger for The Huffington Post. She is a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the Feminist Press. Tanenbaum has been featured and profiled in Redbook, The Washington Post, and the Forward, among many other publications. She lectures widely at venues including the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco, Makor at the 92nd Street Y in Manhattan, and campuses such as Stanford, Duke, Columbia, University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, and Spelman.
Tanenbaum regularly appears on TV news and entertainment shows as an expert on women’s issues. She has appeared on Oprah, The Today Show, CBS This Morning, The O'Reilly Factor, Inside Edition, Politically Incorrect, and many other programs. She is also a frequent guest on National Public Radio and VH1. She has been featured in several documentaries and TV specials including Sluts: The Documentary (2006), which was broadcast on the Sundance Channel and the Independent Film Channel. She lives in New York City with her husband and two sons.
