When Dr. Van Tilburg's mountain rescue beeper goes off, the call may take him racing up a mountain peak to rescue an injured hiker, scaling a rocky ledge to intubate a hiker who has fallen over a cliff, into a blizzard to search for missing skiers, or to a mountain airplane crash scene for body recovery with his team, Hood River Crag Rats, the oldest mountain rescue group in the nation. Christopher Van Tilburg, MD, is a wilderness medicine specialist and author of eight books including Mountain Rescue Doctor. Dr. Van Tilburg serves as medical contributor to National Geographic Adventure, Editor of Wilderness Medicine, and Contributing Editor to Backcountry and Columbia Gorge Magazine. He has appeared on the CBS Morning Show, CNN, and Jeep World of Sports. He lives with his daughters in Hood River, Oregon.
